Council Meeting 16/07/2024

We had a full agenda at our second last Council meeting for this term. I’ve picked three highlights to recap for you all below.

Motion Continued Presence of Tower Crane at 191 Fowler Road, Illawong

The community in and around the crane at Illawong have raised multiple concerns about this crane, specifically regarding its structural integrity, safety implications, and compliance with relevant regulations. There is a growing sense of unease among local residents who fear for their safety and the potential risks posed by the crane. I put forward the below motion to address these concerns

THAT Council:

  1. Acknowledges the long running concerns of the neighbouring community regarding a tower
crane that has been placed on site at 191 Fowler Road, Illawong for more than eight years.
  2. Receives a report at its November 2024 Ordinary Council Meeting, detailing the history,
jurisdiction and legal responsibilities, current status, and actions, including that of the NSW
Building Commission, to have the tower crane lawfully removed from the site.
  3. Officers provide updates to the neighbours and others in the community who are impacted

North Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club Redevelopment Project

The North Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club redevelopment project was a significant focus for the Sutherland Shire Council. This ambitious initiative aims to enhance the facilities and services of the club, ensuring it continues to serve the community effectively.

In a collaborative effort, I have worked alongside my fellow Councillors from both the Labor and Liberal parties to ensure the successful advancement of this project. Recognising the importance of maintaining our commitment to broader council objectives, we have collectively agreed to the addition of point 18 in the Motion of Mayor Councillor Pesce & Councillor Provan to the project proposal.

Point 18 emphasises the Council’s commitment to securing funding and resources necessary to ensure that our agreed Capital Works and the 4-year Operational Plan proceed as planned. This addition is crucial as it safeguards the progress we have made over the past Council term and guarantees the continued implementation of essential projects across the Shire.

This bipartisan cooperation highlights our shared dedication to the community and our commitment to delivering on the promises made throughout our tenure.

Mayoral Minute – Recognition of Achievement Sutherland Shire Netball Association State Championships

Sutherland Shire Netball Association (SSNA) has had another remarkable year at the Netball NSW
HART Junior and Senior State Titles held over the past month.
After being crowned NSW State Champions in 2023, the Under 14 and Under 15 girls have done it
again, being crowned back-to-back winners in the Championship Division. That is an extraordinary
achievement.
The 15s, led by Coach Michelle Allen and Manager Hayley Smith, only lost two games all weekend
and won the round robin event by two points. They scored 390 goals over the three days and had 258
goals scored against them.
The 14s, led by Coach Jordan Bedingfield and Manager Emma Paterson, truly embodied the team’s
mantra of “unbreakable”. The team won 17 of their 19 games, but in a nail biter finish, had to grind it
out for goal percentage to take home the trophy, which they did by a huge gap of nearly 20%.
SSNA also had a strong showing in the other age groups, with the Under 12s finishing a close runner up in their first State Titles, the Under 13s placed 7th and the Under 17s placed 6th.
The future of netball in the Shire looks bright!

THAT:
Council congratulates the Under 14s and Under 15s Sutherland Shire Netball Association (SSNA)
players, coaches and managers on their 2024 State Championship titles, and also extend
congratulations to Nerida Noble, SSNA President, Catherine Reynolds, SSNA Rep Liaison Officer,
and the Executive and volunteers
